Italy is a place many thousands upon thousands of tourists visit each year. It is full of beauty both in the land and in the people. Italy has always been my number one place to go for a vacation because of the rich culinary background and amazing geographical features it has to offer. There is also a history side to Italy that I have always wanted to see. The Vatican, home of the Pope and epicenter of catholic religion, and the Colosseum, one of the world’s great landmarks, make their home in the great country of Italy. The city that I am most interested in is Florence, Italy.
htt 230 - Italy came to be in 1861 under the reign of King Victor Emmanuel II when he united the regional states of the peninsula including Sardinia and Sicily. Parliamentary government rule lasted up until the early 1920’s when Benito Mussolini established a Fascist dictatorship. (Central Intelligence Agency, 2011)   During his reign he allied with Adolf Hitler, the leader of Nazi Germany, and The Japanese to form the Axis powers in World War II. This alliance ultimately leads to the defeat of Italy and the Axis Powers by the Allies at the end of WWII. (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, 2011). After the fall of Mussolini a democratic republic replaced the fascism and monarchy in 1946 and lead to the economic revival of the country. Italy was a charter member of NATO and has been at the forefront of European unification of economy and politics by joining the Economic and Monetary Union in 1999. (Central Intelligence Agency, 2011) Today it is a great country in Europe for the traveling tourist to vacation to.   
htt220 - Italy is located in the southern part of Europe and is part of the Mediterranean Sea. Italy boasts a whopping 7,600km (4,722mi) of coast line and has everything from Mediterranean weather hot weather in the south to alpine like cold and snow in the north. htt 220
